La Pirata Kitchen is a Long Island–based catering bakery that makes vegan goods from organic and fair-trade ingredients, founded upon the belief that we can be ethical and health-conscious as well as indulgent.
It was started when Alicia Kennedy, a copy editor and longtime lover and baker of cakes, decided to go vegan. But the common ingredients found in vegan recipes were highly processed margarines, oils, and soy that led to mediocre flavor. After a lot of research and testing, she created a way to make moist baked goods and fluffy buttercream using organic coconuts.
Since our first gig in July 2012 making 200 cupcakes for a movie premiere, we've been taking special orders and making fans at Massapequa's Organic Corner. In September 2012, we provided the food at NYC's Vegan Drinks meetup, selling bean-filled pastelillos; we made the dough, and the sofrito was made of completely local ingredients from Riverhead's Golden Earthworm Farm. In December 2012, we did three Vegan Shop-Up events in a row for the holiday season, and participated again in February 2013 for their Valentine's event. We then decided to focus on expanding our reach on Long Island. We're keeping it small and local, but we'll also have a store on this site so that everyone can enjoy our cookies and muffins.
You can find us at Organic Corner at 37 Broadway in Massapequa, or call 631-806-7688 to place an order. Keep up with us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
